After losing their preseason opener Friday night to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had Saturday off but were back on the practice field Sunday as head coach Lovie Smith continues to get his team ready for their regular season opener.
There were good performances Friday but there were bad ones too.
Here are today’s notes from practice courtesy of the local media:
- The Bucs waived safety Mark Joyce
- Alterraun Verner returned to practice but Mike Jenkins continues to sit out
- Steven Means also sat out but it’s nothing serious
- Jamon Meredith is now focusing on playing tackle rather than guard
- Despite getting injured Friday night, Robert Herron was on the practice field today
- Dashon Goldson, who didn’t play Friday night, will play on Saturday against Miami
- Bucs practiced pass protection a lot after Friday’s failures
- Eric Page, Skye Dawson and Bobby Rainey were returning punts today
- Page and Dawson joined Jeff Demps, Mike James and Solomon Patton in kick return duties
- Jace Daniels joined Oniel Cousins at guard on the first team
- Rookie Charles Sims continues to do good things

- Rashaan Melvin got all of the first-team work at the left corner position
- Lavonte David picked off Josh McCown in 11-on-11 drills
- Smith named some players he thinks are leaders on special teams
- Louis Murphy, who was solid Friday, and Brandon Myers had touchdown receptions in practice
- Mike Glennon hit Herron and Tommy Streeter for touchdowns but was also intercepted by Leonard Johnson
- Smith says there is a big improvement in how your team plays from week 1 to week 2 in preseason
